The Nation Film Registry Honors The Three Stooges
C3 Current Event • Glendale, CA • December 17, 2002

The Three Stooges trophy case garnered another addition when the 1934 short ‘Punch Drunks’ was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry. The short was one of the 25 honorees for 2002, bringing the total placed on the Registry to 350 films.

Punch Drunks The 2002 honorees, announced December 17, 2002, were selected form a list of over 1,000 nominees, and, besides The Three Stooges, includes ‘Alien’, ‘From Here To Eternity’, and ‘Sabrina’. According to the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically” significant can be added to the Registry.

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said “Taken together, the 350 films in the National Film Registry represent a stunning range of American filmmaking…all deserving recognition, preservation and access by future generations”. For each title named to the Registry, the Library of Congress works to ensure that the film is preserved for all time.

Larry, Moe and Curly not only starred in the film but also wrote the script and received the Story credits. The short was directed by Lou Breslow and featured the actress Dorothy Granger, who appeared in over 150 films in her career including the classic ‘Raintree County’.

Punch Drunks In an interesting aside, Dorothy Granger and our own Director of Marketing, Eric Lamond, appeared together with star billing in the 1955 Andy Clyde two reeler ‘Scratch, Scratch, Scratch’, that was directed by Jules White, who was associated with The Three Stooges throughout their long tenure with Columbia Pictures and directed many of their shorts.

The legacy of The Three Stooges continues to grow. Among their many, many accolades: Several Motion Picture Exhibitor Laurel Awards, an Academy Award Nomination, a Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and now part of our cultural history with inclusion in the National Film Registry.

We know the Boys would all be proud, just as we are here at C3 with this latest recognition of the talent of The Three Stooges.
