In addition to the many fans, Stooges relatives – children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all made the trip to Philadelphia April 1-3 for Three Stooges Con 2016. Richard Cohen of Baron Conventions L.L.C. stated he was elated with the great turnout which was the first gathering for Three Stooge’s fans in over 18 years.
Moe Howard’s daughter, Joan Howard Maurer, celebrated her 89th Birthday during the event and shared happy memories of her father Moe, saying he was “a devoted father, spoiling me like I was a princess, always bringing a present when he returned from a road trip.” A record number of nearly 40 Three Stooges family members attended the event.
During three days of panels, presentations, and non-stop film screenings, fans were also able to view rare Three Stooges memorabilia and collectibles like Larry’s violin and original theatrical one-sheets. A Dealer room offered official Stooges merchandise from ShopKnuckleheads and other licensees, including The Three Stooges new comic books from American Mythology.
From classic to current – “The Three Stooges Movie” /2012/ was represented by a celebrity panel including Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos who played Curly & Moe, respectively, in the 2012 revival. Co-writer Mike Cerrone rounded out the panel that was moderated by Earl Benjamin, Executive Producer and President & CEO of C3 Entertainment, Inc.
It was an entertaining and informative 45-minute panel where they shared stories and memories of making the film with fellow castmate Sean Hayes (Larry) and even gave insight into what’s to come for the next movie. Something that all the fans wanted to know: “When’s the next Three Stooges movie coming out?” The panel was simultaneously broadcast live to The Three Stooges loyal million-plus Facebook fanbase.
As fans themselves, Sasso and Diamantopoulos appeared on several Q&A panels, autograph sessions and spent time with appreciative fans. Sasso enthusiastically expressed that the making of “The Three Stooges” Movie /2012/ was a love letter to the Stooges. “There is no other way to do it than to make it an homage…I would close my eyes and ask myself, how would Curly do it?”
Adam West and Johnny Ginger also treated convention-goers to a Q&A and autograph signings. West co-starred in the 1965 Three Stooges classic, “The Outlaws Is Coming!” Ginger is one of only two surviving members of The Outlaws from the 1965 film.
Saturday evening, April 2nd, a charity auction was held benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. Among the items auctioned: A walk-on role in the upcoming “Three Little Stooges” Movie, won by Brad Server, Curly Howard’s grandson. Heston and Elise DuBay placed the winning bid for artist proof #1 of official Three Stooges licensee Motor Marc Lacourciere’s new painting “Curly Saves The Day” which was unveiled to the crowd during the open-night party and signed by all Stooges family members.
Fans, young and old were in attendance. Trey Luna, a 32-year old fan who traveled from Dallas with his wife to attend, made this comment regarding the timelessness of The Three Stooges comedy legacy, “Their style lives on because they pack in more laughs per minute than any other comedian or filmmaker I’ve ever seen.”
We can’t wait for the next Convention.
